If I were a news reporter now I would immediately start cutting ties and aggressively begin developing my personal brand. No matter if your're talking about new media or old media, content is king, and the reporters at papers like the time don't fully appreciate (imho) the significance of the value-add they bring. I'd be developing my own site and revenue mechanism.
Edit: Also, the article isn't really predicting it to die, just that its current model is be unsustainable and it needs changes to its pricing model.
The New York Times is a corporation masquerading as an "institution". Ditto for the lesser evil of The New Yorker and the appropriately named Con The Nasty parent corporation. These are the organs of propaganda that frame and limit debate among the "educated" set. They are undemocratic, unaccountable, yet enjoy privileged nay 'sacrosanct' station in our society. They clearly lack the corporate will to be honest guardians of "what is fit to print" in our society. So, I reiterate: good riddance.
