I've been able to do this with my Moto X since I got it. It's alright, only thing you have to worry about is "training" it in a bunch of different lighting conditions. Found it to be more hassle than it's worth, though, even considering its secret-spy-mission allure.

What a potentially fantastic idea. Not only would it be a potential l way to open your phone, but it could serve as a chronological documentation of your age, where you have been, what you have done etc. With the ability to Geo stamp this, it could really Chronicle your life and provide interesting data points both geographically and visually. Wow. Fascinating potential here.
