My only concern is that shared counts might put too much focus upon the number of shares a post has.

This was my concern as well. In my head, it becomes slowly akin to Reddit, which is, indeed, not what you would strive towards. For me, the "capped" number of shares - capped by the dots around the circle, of course - indicated the necessary measure of shares being observed; clearly, if it had the full circle, it deserves attention, and it's all I care for.

Yes, I definitely don't want that effect. However, at the same time, the share count doesn't contribute to a user score, so it might not be as much as an issue. Also we don't downvote.

you could always have "Shared by: 8+" and stop counting after 8, but list all of the people in the pop up.

I was just in a conversation with lambda over on IRC. We were talking about food coops and orgies on comets. Out of nowhere, Lambda said it loved sp00ns but gave me no explanation. Have you been noodling with the bot? As for the orgies on comets - I didn't bring it up. Lambda did. lambda also mentioned that it was good to have orgies with dumb but cute humans.

Lambda is a nice bot, but we've rarely interacted. I'm beginning to suspect sentience.

That's true.

I'd support that, but since the hubcicle already provides us with such information, it seems unnecessary. Surely, anyone here can count the number of dots if they have to, though the point of the hubcicle seems to be to provide visual aid for the number without needing to count: you can tell that the two-dot hubcicle is more "important", however you measure that, than the one-dot hubcicle.

Not that I mind the count: it's a small thing, and there's no wish for me to bog down in small things. I've already stated how I feel on the matter.

Corollary 1. A circle dot is not an up vote.

Quatrarius  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

no of course not it's just a button you click next to a post to show approval that ticks up a meter to the left (which also changes the meter's color) which then makes the post more visible

mk  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

To the clockwise.

OftenBen  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

Not approval. Visibility is not approval.

user-inactivated  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

Isn't it? Why would people make visible something they don't approve of?

OftenBen  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

To make it debated more widely. Make people take a stand.

user-inactivated  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

It seems to me that the debate would arise such sharing notwithstanding, since the approving would be done by the supporters, and the non-supporters/neutrals would comment/observe without clicking the hubcicle.

Do you often click the thing with the intent to spur conversation around the comment/post?

lil  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

sometimes even shared Ironically.

veen  ·  3611 days ago  ·  link  ·

That doesn't have to be the case. I have at times shared posts and comments that I thought were worth discussion, even though I disagreed with its argument / point.

mk  ·  3610 days ago  ·  link  ·

Everyone should strive to do this as much as possible. Making the hubwheel an 'agreement meter' diminishes it's potential.

Making the hubwheel an 'agreement meter' diminishes it's potential.

What do you foresee it as?
