mk, I've heard speculation that CRISPR is a strong candidate for the nobel prize. Think it could happen in the near future? Or would it take many successes in the clinic before it gets that level of recognition?

Probably in the next few years. This technology is new enough that it needs to stew for a few years. The discovery of miRNA is the fastest Nobel that I'm aware of, and that was something like 6 years or so, depending how you count when the discovery was actually made. CRISPR has the similarity that it went from nothing to universal adoption overnight. I've not yet used it, but I plan to in the near future. It's absolutely ingenious.

This is actually the first time I have heard of it >< Was never mentioned to me in my studies... shame!

Well, if you weren't doing any DNA editing in vitro, there's no reason why you would have come across it, so don't feel bad. Many people use it to knock out specific miRNAs in cell lines. If you do that kind of work, it's a revelation.

I use shRNA, siRNA etc.

I should have known about it.... At least now I do!
