I used to have a black lab. I remember sitting with him at our cottage next to campfire at night, and every once in a while he would raise his head and look about, and then look at me. I wouldn't have heard or smelled anything.
I had the feeling that he was asking me: "Did you hear/smell that?" I think dogs must think we are pretty oblivious.
