The highlight of this article was this announcement: He [Neil] is now shooting a remake of Carl Sagan’s classic Cosmos series, which will air on Fox in 2013.
ohboyohboyohboyohboy.
I wonder if Fox is just airing this, or if they have a lot to do with the production. I hope they keep their paws off of it as much as possible. One thing that is awesome about Cosmos is Sagan's respect for the truth and unabashed criticism of astrology, religion, and other forces that have stood in the way of astronomers over the centuries. Another great thing is his presentation of the history of astronomy and physics, which I think would be considered too boring for main stream TV these days.
As much as I hate the remake trend that's enveloped us the last several years, I actually think revisiting Cosmos makes sense, given how much we've learned about the universe in the last few decades. However, I'll only support it if it does justice to the original, which I think will be hard with a) the egalitarianism that is evident in the media these days, and b) the reliance on special effects over substance that has taken shape since CGI has become cheap and accessible.

I was thinking the other day how happy I was that Neil deGrasse Tyson exists. He is a charismatic, gifted, and enthusiastic science populist. I don't think that the value of this for our society can possibly be overstated. I remember thinking how fortunate we are that there is someone to take up the mantle of Carl Sagan, and lo and behold, I come to find out that Neil is remaking Cosmos as well.
How fitting.
