It seems to me that this article is focused solely on graduate education in the humanities. As an undergrad, I've been considering whether or not Ishouldtry to get a PhD. So, my question is: are the problems discussed in this paper also prevalent in STEM fields? I know there are a couple PhD's around here somewhere.

Typically, a PhD in a STEM field will guarantee you a job more than a PhD in the humanities. I'm not meaning to belittle the humanities, that's just the market right now.

Either way, the trick is to get it quick, and network with as many people as possible who can testify to your legitimacy as you go through the program. PhD's with social skills (especially STEM) are a sought-after set of abilities.
