It's usually quite a bit easier to overlook someone's opposition to, say, gay rights when they're only maligning your ideals and not your personhood. I'd be willing to bet it would be harder to hold a cordial conversation with one of the Phelps when they've come to town to actually condem you to hell. Great observation. It's easy to say you support equal rights and then be casual about your associations with those that do not when it's not your rights that are unequal. I do wish that we would focus more on our commonalities, I think this would certainly help to dissolve our differences.
