Driving to work today, I heard on the radio about "Tow-in Surfing". It's a form of extreme surfing on top of big waves, which are often 60-80 foot high. Since the waves are too high for the surfers to simply paddle to the top of the waves, they have to use jet skies, sometimes helicopters to drag them up there, and then ride the waves.
Along the north shore of Maui island, the waves are known to be extremly high due to the underwater ridge, they often reach the height of 60 feet and above, are therefore named after the horror movie "Jaws" by the extreme surfers.
This video showed a tow-in surfer surfing a 80-foot-high "Jaws" wave north of Maui island. I can't believe he was alive after that.

Some people define enlightenment as being fully present and in the "now". I think that the reason people do "extreme" things like this is to catch a glimpse of "enlightenment". Unfortunately, this method is fleeting, the key is to figure out how to be fully present in everyday life and not just when death is over your shoulder.
