I've mentioned before on Hubski that in 2010 my wife, myself and two of our friends went to Peru and took a 4 day hike up the Incan trail to Machu Picchu. It stands out as one of the best experiences of my life. It's a trip that I will forever measure all others against. The hike was challenging and gorgeous and the history of the trail we walked was palpable. Our guide had a dual degree in peruvian botany and history --she was PERFECT. In fact, my friend and I both had secret crushes on her. (We found out after returning home that approximately 9 months later she had a baby) -It wasn't mine... but I'm not so sure about my friend ;-)

Anyways, I want to know where I should go next that will provide a similar level of beauty, challenge, history and thrill that the trip to Machu Picchu provided? Any suggestions? Physical exertion is a must and within a 6 hour flight would be appreciated.

Iceland.

It has the natural beauty and lots to do. Scuba diving, whale watching, blue lagoon, geysers, etc. The food is also wonderful (even the street food). The weather is also very nice as it is not too cold nor hot.

Thanks for the suggestion bgritzut, I've never considered Iceland and I probably should. I've no doubt that it is beautiful, what are some of the things you do there when visiting?

I think its the most underrated travel destinations.

If you're into animals, you can go puffin and whale watching.

If you like natural landscape there's gullfoss falls, geysirs. Also, the ridge separating the North American tectonic plate and Mid-Atlantic plate, you can go scuba diving in the waters that separate it.

Iceland has great water so to speak, so a lot of people go to the swimming pools and the geothermal pool blue lagoon is a big attraction. Water is crystal clear wherever you go, so they always make good pictures.

Also, food is amazing. Great seafood, and the most popular restaurant is a hot-dog stand. You can Google it and Bill Clinton has even stopped by to eat there.

If you're into technology, you can tour their geothermal plant. Iceland is 99% powered by renewable energy so it's pretty neat to get to walk around their plant.

There is literally tons to do in Iceland and I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Thank you for that, it sounds nice. There is nothing like swimming in a crystal clear lagoon to make you feel as though you are in paradise. Also, food is a HUGE motivator for me. If there is one person that should be able to be trusted with a hotdog endorsement, it's Bill Clinton.

I recommend the West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island. A 4-5 day hike through wild rainforest and across beautiful beaches It has excellent campsites, lots of wildlife and you'll meet interesting peolple. For the real die-hards I'll recommend the 500 mile Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango, through various national and provincial parks. For me that was a real adventure. If you like cycling, cosy pubs, history and great breakfast, you'll love riding for 2 weeks along the british south coast from Harwich to Land's End and then back again on a more northernly and faster route that takes you along Bath, Stonehenge and London. This summer I will be walking the Larapinta Trail in Australia, which I think will be an adventure too. Happy hiking!

Thanks Hein, these are some great suggestions. I think your first suggestion is the most practical for us, time is a factor and as much as I would LOVE to ride for two weeks along the british south coast I can't be away from our daughter for that long. A 10 day trip would be ideal. The West Coast Trail sounds wonderful and challenging. Plus, it would give me another reason to visit my close friend in Vancouver. sounds_sound, have you hiked this before?

Enjoy your trek on the Larapinta Trail, from what I gather it's going to be a pretty hot hike in the summer. Hydrate!

You might like to pair the West Coast Trail with a bike ride from Vancouver to Victoria (ferry included) and maybe throw in a wine tour in the Okanagan which is sort of Canada's napa valley.

Really though, These places wouldn't be too different from Charlevoix. Except everything is at a WAY bigger scale. Pacific Ocean, Coast Mountains. If I were you guys, I would go to Istanbul.

We are going to be in Charlevoix in the not too distant future and are taking two nights to stay in Wine country. Wish you were going to be there pal, I'd mix up some "Charlevoix's" and we'd be big pimpin

No. Never hiked the West Coast Trail. camping and busy are two things I don't like to combine. Tofino is nice though. Spent a week there last summer.

I did in 2004, also as a by-product of visiting a close friend in Vancouver (I love that city!). Actually my summer is Australia's winter so I will be OK.

That makes more sense, from what I read the trail can be brutal during Australia's summer. Have a great time, let me know what you think of the trek. I like the way you travel.
