I have been to Normandy, it was a great experience. The French have done a great job preserving the battlefields and honoring the American, Canadian, and British soldiers' valor and sacrifice. Many bunkers remain in their original state as do other features like the hedgerows and often one can walk through them and explore at will. The beaches stretch for over 20 miles so taking a minivan tour allowed us to cover more ground. Even then we only went to Omaha and Utah beaches. Normandy also has a lot of history: remnants of the Roman Empire, the coastal castles, and cathedrals from the Middle Ages, the Bayeux Tapestry and other pieces of history stretching across 2,000 years.

I just realized I sound like a tourist promoter, but my wife and I really enjoyed the trip and wished we had more time to spend there.
