Job said no which while disappointing alleviates the worries of taking a job that's a 25% pay cut while my partner starts her PhD at a 70% pay cut. They were going to hire one person at a level 2 and have decided to instead hire 2 people at a level 1. Both will be supervised by my current supervisor who never trained me and always acted like an ass. Going to be fun watching that.
Backyard is both (a) tiny and (b) not accessible at all and we've got people we need accessibility for. None of the family in the area has a sufficiently sized yard unfortunately. Parks we've looked at. Some issues with accessibility and somewon't provide tables and chairs which becomes expensive quickly. We're gonna figure it out it'll just take some finagling
I'd be down with that but we also want pictures of family and friends and a day to celebrate us so we're leaning towards wedding.
Had an interview Monday for the first time since the job search began. I think it went fairly well, should hear back in 2-3 weeks. Otherwise just working on quotes for floors and roof, and starting to think about moving logistics. Also trying to figure out how to have a reasonably priced wedding in the bay area. Shit is expensive yo.
Not an offer unfortunately just an interview. And no I never did :( though in fairness I think if I was in a job paying that much I'd have a hard time not checking emails on weekends and I value my weekends.
Had a job reach out on June 13th to say "here's the remote work policy and also the pay isn't negotiable is that okay?" And I said yes that's fine please save me from my current situation. They never responded. Then yesterday the sent the exact same email. So I called the number in the person's email and got voicemail. Left a voicemail and sent another email. Ugh this is annoying. I'm damn well fit for this job, did nearly identical on the East Coast and I know I'd be happy, even with the 25% pay cut, and now maybe they're too unorganized to actually realize I'm interested even after tapping into my network to have them advocate for me. Edit: literally as I posted this they apologized for not seeing my first email and confirmed they did receive it
Sprained my ankle last weekend on a hike. It's doing okay, but I've had to do a lot of walking on it at work the past few days which hasn't been fun. Tomorrow is a holiday, so we're taking Friday off and going for a long weekend at the cabin. Excited to be off the grid for a few days. Applied for a job paying 400k per year for shits and gigs. I'm sure I'll never hear back but what the hell. Vice President of Population Health for a local hospital system. It balance out the job I applied to last week capped at 73k per year. Otherwise we've officially started wedding planning. Shit is way more expensive than I expected. Which is going to be awesome as we slash our income while also buying a house. What a combination. We never do things in half measures lol
Anyone remember Lambda? That was peak AI delusions.
We closed on the house! So we're officially homeowners which is wild. Move in will happen sometime in the next ~70 days. Up to 60 day rent back, but exact date unknown. A job opened up I'd really enjoy and I worked at their sister organization on the East Coast. It's also a great location compared to our new place. But it's also a 25% pay cut and I'm not sure I can afford that. So I am going to set up a meeting with them, organized through my old boss, to see if the salary is negotiable because if it's not I'm not going to waste everyone's time. But if they can even come up in salary 1k/month I think we can swing it. But it's government-adjacent so odds are low.
Just had a call with a recruiter. Job would be awesome if (1) it wasn't 2 hours away and (2) it was permanent but it's only a 2 month contract "with possiblity for extension" so I'm going to do the interview for the experience of it, but am not taking the risk of a 2 month contract when I've got a job that I hate but should be around for another year or so. Ugh I hate this job market.
Been a part of 2 unions now. First one was phenomenal. Worked there for a summer semester and that was it, and because I took a class during that summer, I got a $5,000 tuition reimbursement check at the end which was more than I made all summer. Current union leaves a bit to be desired. They treat limited term and part time employees significantly worse than permanent ones. But it's also likely the reason why in 18 months my salary has gone up 10% so I can't complain too much.
Japan has been wonderful! So not ready to leave and return to work next week. It's going to be a chaotic return too. Conference presentation Wednesday that's a 2 hour drive away, monthly meeting Friday that will take a bunch of prep. And we close on the house Friday too, so we have a ton of work on that front as well, with walkthrough and organizing everything. 60 day rent back, so at least we don't need to pack up everything and move! Two weeks of vacation per year is criminal, I hate that US standard. This was a great use of it.

It's Wednesday Afternoon in Japan so here I am posting this on Wednesday! Japan trip is beautiful. It's been a wonderful reset, and we're not even halfway through our trip! Tokyo was awesome but too many people. Bullet train was smooth but really busy. Smaller local train to Takayama had bigger windows and was quieter, we liked that one better. Takayama is great. Off to Kanazawa and Kyoto (possible day trip to Osaka too for the world fair) in the coming days. Then a quick trip to Kinosaki for tattoo friendly onsens, and then home. Food and trip has been incredible so far, can't wait to see what else comes our way!
